United Keetoowah Band Chief George G. Wickliffe
was born in Cherokee Indian Country in Kenwood, Oklahoma. Chief
Wickliffe attended Oklahoma Military Academy where he obtained an
Associate’s of Arts Degree, Northeastern State University in Tahlequah
obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Education as well as a Master’s
in Education. He also attended the University of Tulsa and Pittsburg
State University completing courses in School Administration. While
pursuing his higher education degrees, Chief Wickliffe was named to
the President’s and Dean’s honor rolls.
In his professional career,
Chief Wickliffe served as a teacher, a middle school principal and was
Superintendent of Schools for 22 years. Chief Wickliffe is bilingual
and fluent in the Cherokee language and is a certified Cherokee
language instructor. He has taught the language at the Cherokee
Nation, Northeastern State University, Claremore College, and for the
United Keetoowah Band..
Chief George Wickliffe was
inaugurated in January of 2005 as the Chief of the United Keetoowah
Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma. He is committed to preserving
the Language, History, and Culture of the Keetoowah Cherokee, Honoring
and taking care of the Elders, and working to provide a bright future
for the Keetoowah youth.
